Mormon LDS Temple Garments Underwear Markings

Zoom in on the secret markings. Updated 04/15/2012

The most important defining feature of a temple garment is the four marks. The mark of the square, shaped like a reverse L, appears over the right breast. The mark of the compass, shaped like a V, appears over the left breast. The navel mark is a horizontal line about three-fourths inch long placed in the midsection; the knee mark is the same, placed just above the hem of the right leg. Originally, the four marks were cut into the garment during the initiatory temple rite. In the twentieth century, this custom gave way to stitching the marks into the garment at the time of its manufacture.

The male garment worn below is the "industrial strength version" worn by Mormon Temple patrons who perform multiple ordinances for the dead. For example during the initiatory rites the patron will disrobe and dress up ten to fifteen times within a half hour as he and the busy bee temple workers save the deceased by proxy as rapidly as possible.

OMG! Where did they get the ceremonial garment? This is the one that I've always complained about and people never believed that they existed. We used to have to wear this fashion in the temple. I understand that its use of discontinued in the 70's. I was told that they became forbiden when it was learned that fundies still wore them and were somehow going to LDS temples for endowments and bringing the ceremonial garment with them.

The jolly fun about this garment is that it is worn "to cover your nakedness" when in fact the important naked parts hang out.

At one point I was told that this style garment plays an important role in the culmination of the 2nd anointing as part of the private couples follow up. - 04/16/2012 - by slatheredtwice

These are the old button-up "ordinance garments," considered a great improvement over the lace-up ordinance garments--by everyone but the officiators. Remember that you were naked and the last thing that the officiator did after the washing and annointing was to "place" the garment on you.

As he was chanting the magical words, he would tie the garment. The buttons made this difficult, and some temple workers cursed them. But with the button-up variety, members finally got a crotch. Before that, women's nether regions were totally exposed and the men actually dangled out.

Not only did they NOT cover your nakedness, but they accented the private parts as if to say, "Lo, here! My penis and scrotum! Lo, there! Her vulva!" *sighs* Good times. - 04/16/2010 - by cludgie

Bad memories for me. That's the exact garment my arrogant father wore around the house in the early seventies. The front is, aggh, translucent, and the rear butt flap opens and closes as the perpetrator walks. It was a disgusting display. - 04/16/2010 - by DB

I never had to wear these (I went to the temple for the first time in 2008) but for some reason the pictures are just giving me chills and making me mauseous.

I can't believe I was actually afraid of getting in a car wreck as punishment for not wearing them/going to church on the day I took those off. - 04/16/2012 - by treehugger
